Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Chocolates and roses are being bought out by the tons. Lovers are busy planning and taming the stomach butterflies. But what about us? What about the single moms out there?
It’s gotta be tough, here you are, sitting on the couch, eating ice cream and watching the Wedding Planner on repeat and crying. Well, if you’re a single mom, I am here to tell you, all the love you need is right here. Mine happens to be sleeping next to me as I type, quietly taking in little breaths in and out, in and out.
That is my love, my life, my world. I can honestly say (though I know things change) that she is all I need. No man will ever fill me with love the way she has. So I am not alone on this day of love.
I have all the love in the world, every day.
Now, what does a single mom do on Valentine’s Day?
It’s about bonding. It’s a celebration of love. It’s about the greatest love a mother knows – her children. And there is no greater love I’ve ever know than that for my little girl. So, let’s celebrate this gift of love today (and every day!).
Here are some ideas to get you started!
This lifetime moment is worth every penny. Plan on an amazing dinner at your kid’s favorite spot. Feeling brave? Ask your kids to choose your entree and if the pocket allows, get 3 desserts! (c’mon, it’s a special night… just make it an early dinner so the sugar has a chance to work it’s way out before bedtime)
Pop some homemade popcorn and get creative with seasonings. Then, rent a light comedy and enjoy a cozy night in. Some of my faves are salt and butter (obvi) with onion powder. Check out When the Cravings Come Calling post for amazingly delicious ideas you never thought of when making this age old snack.
Get in the Kitchen!
Bake some cookies together. Sure things can get messy with little ones in the kitchen. But messy can be fun especially if you actually plan on it. This way you expect the mess, not stress. Life is not about a spot free kitchen after all. That’s not what one thinks back to when looking back on their life journey.
We think of laughter ringing through the house, we think of smiles and hugs, we think of quality time spent together strengthening the bond. So, before you think of flour covered floors and chocolaty sticky counters think of the benefits.
Experts say that having your children help in the kitchen builds confidence, ignites imagination, improve science and math skills, builds sensory experiences, opens a whole new world of health that they are willing to eat, builds long lasting relationships, creates life-long memories and so much more! Check out LiveStrong on the subject for more info.
With that said, here are a few delicious recipes for healthy cookies:

- Cowboy Cookies 100 calories/20 minutes
- Healthy Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies 150 calories/40 minutes
Show your family and friends you care. Make homemade Valentines Day cards for your family. Grandparents, aunts, and uncles, as well as friends, will love receiving this close to heart gift of love! Here are some wonderful ideas from Activity Village to get you started. Just pick a card and get started.
Volunteer. Nothing says
Nothing says love like an act of selfless kindness. Well, almost nothing… sharing the idea of volunteering and helping the needy with your kids adds volumes and heaps of love. So, why not spread the love on this day of love and teach your little one a life lesson that they will treasure forever!
