The Single Mom Life is a Roller Coaster
And that’s putting it mildly.
How do I raise a genuine human being? What do I tell them about dad? What about bullies? What, in the world, is time management? College? Life insurance? The balance of work and life? And, oh, these finances! Or worse yet, WHAT FINANCES?! Okay, okay, I’ll stop.
There are times, I know, that you feel like you’re all alone in the world and drowning all the while silently screaming for help. Does anyone hear our pleas? At times, it feels that help is just not coming. But this is a dangerous way of thinking. When times get tough (and they do, sometimes, more often than not) take a breath. It’s the toughest job in the universe so it’s bound to come with a few trying turns. It’s hard to focus on all of the miracles that surround you when the walls seem to be closing in but, believe me, they are there. And, there are a lot of them. So, just breathe, slowly and intentionally, and know that you are not alone.
First, sticking together is a must, ladies. I can’t stress this enough. Support and love for one another is more valuable and beautiful than we ever give credit for. We, myself included, should aim each day to reach out and touch someone in a positive and loving way. Look for local support groups through Facebook and Twitter to reach out to folks who are in need of an encouraging word. It’s also a great way to meet new friends who share in your ways. Also, if you haven’t yet tried, give Meetup a chance. There are tons of groups and meetups created by like-minded people right in your area! There you can join other single parents on trips and adventures with the kiddos and, sometimes, without. Give it a try and you’ll love it.

Second, read, read, and read some more. There are no shortages of books for single moms out there. And books are your friends, especially when it comes to the topic of single parenthood. The written word not only gives you advice and ideas, it allows you to look within yourself and recognize yourself through the faces of the authors and characters within. Reading gives me the private time I need to get away from my own head and drift into something new allowing my empath to take on a role of another. It allows me to formulate ideas and plans that suit me and my life and make it better.
Books for single moms are especially helpful because the advice is written by the ladies who have (or still are) walking in our very shoes. They have seen what you’ve seen. They have fought the battles that you are fighting. From money to education there are questions that arise that your parents, who have been married for the last 25 years, just might not know how to answer.

I never thought the man I’ve loved for 8 years and with whom I have 2 small children would ever cheat on me. I‘ve got to tell you honestly I simply could not get over this, regardless of the hardships that were waiting for me with two young children. I filed for divorce, the law was on my side and the kids remained in my care. I‘ve been raising my children by myself for 6 months now and in this time I’ve started looking for resources for single parents. Iovana Yao’s book opened my mind to some things every single parent needs to know to be able to raise physically, mentally and emotionally healthy children. “Two in one” is full of advice and tips to succeed in raising, in the best conditions, the most awesome kids alone. With baby arrives a lot of responsibilities, expectations and worrying, whether you will be good father/mom or not. There is nothing better as to be quality prepared and have clear strategy before the little one will see the first light of the world.
Me and my partner want to be fully prepared, therefore, we are studying everything about parenting and found this book very valuable. It helps us set up our main priorities, time management and lot of more good stuff. Now we are prepared even better for our baby. Thanks. -David
I never thought I would be a single mother… in fact, it never even crossed my mind until the day when my husband left. All of a sudden I was left all alone with my own grief over the loss of love and my boy of only two years old to raise on my own. I admit it was one of my worst periods, and putting aside my won pain and crying all the time I was extremely worried about Tom growing up with no male model, nobody to teach him “the ropes” of being a boy and then a man in life!
Looking for advice on how to fill the shoes of both a mother and a father I came across this book and all I can say is WOW! In a matter of one short month after applying the principles and guidelines learned here I feel a great big drop in the level of anxiety I was feeling and now believe that I can be “the best mom and dad” for my child. Turns out all I actually needed was a little advice and someone pointing me in the right direction. – Karla
Book for Single Moms #9: My Single Mom Life
The day Angela Thomas sold the only thing she had, the diamond from her engagement ring, to take care of her kids was the day she began to believe they were going to make it. In that decision, the faith she had always talked about became the faith she was going to learn how to live. In the years since, God has given Angela a passionate desire . . . to live an amazing life, even while raising four kids as a single mom. In this book she shares her hard-earned wisdom on loneliness, dating, finances, and parenting, encouraging every solo mom. “As a gift to our children,” she says, “we can become healthy moms who are strong and amazing women in spite of our circumstances.”
I have read this book twice… once in April and again in August. Both times it spoke to me. First off, it is from the Christian life view perspective. So not having that perspective would probably make the book less helpful, although it might offer some insight into how that perspective can help.
As another reviewer noted, the book does end with the dream of a “hunky” man, and I agree with her criticism, that a “hunky” man is not the end goal. That said, I think the principle of a spiritually (emotionally healthy) “hunky” man or NO MAN AT ALL, it a great perspective. ie..don’t settle. Don’t make a mistake out of weakness.
What touched me and spoke to me most about this book was the kids. It IS about them. It is about being a “groovy” mom and having a rich life FOR THEM! (As well as for yourself.) And then some very practical insights into how that might look.
I agree, that her work life is very idealistic and not what the rest of us live and that part is hard to relate to. I do feel, when I read it, good for her, what a blessing for her, but that is NOT the life I live.
I have purchased and given this book to other single mom’s. It has a positive, hope-filled message and the shot in the arm to be brave, be a woman of valor and dare to have a full life as a single mom.
I say. Bravo! – Sandee
