From grass stain removal to grill gunk blasters, there are a few outdoor party cleanup hacks you just have to know about! cleanup
Barbecues and backyard parties are all the rave during the warm summer months, I am sure I am not breaking any news here. But did you know that a BBQ party cleanup sometimes requires a whole different technique than the one you’d apply during a regular ole, indoor party?
I’ve combed over the web throughout the years collecting the best party cleanup hacks known to man (tried and tested by yours truly) and here they are! After all, life is not about cleaning up. Life is about living and these tips will have you back at it in no time.
Brilliant Grill Cleanup Hacks
There is no way around it, a backyard party calls for burgers and hotdogs and grills! M-m-m, the true taste of summer and you simply cannot do without it.
For many of my years, my younger brother manned the grill no matter the gathering. I never had to worry about the grilling duties. As such, I never realized just how gross a grill can get after a day of cooking. Now that he is off living his own life, we’ve had to master a few tricks of the BBQ trade. And believe me, the cleaning tricks are almost as important as the pro grilling tricks.
When it comes to scrubbing the grill down at the end of the day it seems there isn’t a shortage of the things you can use to help you get the job done. Luckily, most (if not all) of these things can be found in your kitchen.
Though the array of the list below is wide, the cleaning technique remains the same: heat up your grill and rub away. Make sure you use heat proof gloves, like these top-rated grill gloves for best results.
When the grill is off duty you can use these party cleanup hacks for your grill.
Lemon & Salt
The acidity of the lemon and the grittiness of the salt make it a great pair to help you clean the grill. You can also use this trick before you start cooking to make cleanup time easier. Don’t worry, it won’t affect the taste.
Onions seem to have an adverse effect on the food stuck on the grill. Heat your grill to scolding hot. Cut an onion in half and vigorously rub the lemon half on the grill rack. Dip the onion half into coarse sea salt for even better results.
There are also folks out there who swear that the onion absorbs bacteria and viruses (remember your grandma telling you to put an onion in your sock when you got sick?) but that’s neither here nor there.
Much like Coca-Cola, after a backyard party, you’re likely to come across a half-empty beer bottle or two. Don’t pour them out just yet, Use those suckers to brighten your grill on the cheap instead. The acid found in beer is known to do wonders on all sorts of metals. Sodium bicarbonate, aka baking soda, is a natural mineral. De-grease your grill effortlessly with bakings soda. Simply dip your metal scrubbing brush (I swear by this brush and I am not alone) into some baking soda and give it a good scrub.
If you are a regular at Chewy Mom, you know that I am a huge fan of vinegar. This stuff does everything from making my salad delicious to my hair silky and shine. But did you know that it will make your grill look like new? Here is an awesomely detailed post by Love to Know on Cleaning Your BBQ Grill with Vinegar, though I’ll be honest, this is too time-consuming for my liking. Especially after a party.
Well, apparently I have been missing something when it comes to this method of cleaning your grill and people absolutely swear by it. This Grandma is Fun has come up with the perfect solution that includes this magical component of any grill cleaning for astounding results! Read Cleaning BBQ Grills the Magic Way.
Believe it or not, there are a million cleaning uses for Americas favorite beverage. From car battery erosion to rust, this crazy concoction is a great way to make your grill shine again. The phosphoric acid in this beverage will cause the corrosion process and the rust will loosen leaving you with a breezy (and fizzy) cleanup job.
Powerful Stain Removal Hacks
Grass & Blood
When you are looking for a natural way to get rid of tough stains like grass or blood, Monther Nature Network swears by their hydrogen peroxide solution mix of HP and dish soap. Allowing this to soak in and then working it in lightly with a toothbrush has saved quite a few of my white garments (I am not so good at wearing white). It’s also recommended that you treat stains as soon as they are discovered rather than waiting until the end of the day. Read more on How to Remove Grass Stains Naturally
Wine & Berry
My mother taught me this trick years ago and, honestly, I don’t know how many clothes I would’ve thrown away, both my own and Bossy’s, if I hadn’t been equipped with this incredibly simple trick — add boiling water. That’s the secret! Boiling water, not hot or warm, will make the fruit stain literally disappear in front of your eyes they way they do in those infomercials! No, I am not kidding. So the next time you bump elbows and end up with a splatter on your favorite white top, put on a teakettle and breathe easy.
Meticulous Cleanup Hacks
Cleaning Up Broken Glass
Breaking glass where my Bossy wonders makes me cringe and very uneasy for days! I hate it. Through my search on how to best clean up broken glass, I came across several useful methods of doing just that!
Before cleanup, you will want to wear protective gloves and eyewear. Next, move all obstacles (chairs, vases, etc…) and turn on all the lights possible to catch every reflection of a hiding shard. Then give a thorough vacuum and use the following means to clean up the rest of the mess.
I love duct tape. I really do. I am like a McGyver fixing things with this miracle roll. Really duct tape is one of the best party cleanup hacks I’ve come across. The wider and stickier the better. This works especially well on carpets. Just tear off a piece and work your way slowly pressing it into the floor small areas at a time.
Damp paper towels
I swear by this method. Just wet a paper towel and sweep slowly over the affected area. You will not only feel the paper towel pick up tiny splinters of glass but when you look at the paper towel after wiping you will see the reflections of glass on it. Repeat the wiping process until you do not see any more glass on the paper towel.
Yep, you read that right. Bread is actually one of the best party cleanup hacks when it comes to broken glass because it works. It’s especially useful in hard to reach places like between tiles in the grout. Just press the slice of bread onto the small shards of glass to pick them up safely. Then just discard of it in a safe place where your kids (or the dog) can’t get to it.
This method of cleaning up glass works just like the bread if you don’t feel like wasting groceries. Out of all the party cleanup hacks I’ve come across, play dough is one of my favorites. Perhaps because we have so much of it laying around.
Note: Never use a broom to clean up broken glass. Pieces of the glass will get stuck in the bristles which can come loose the next time you are sweeping with the danger far from your mind. Vacuum and the above techniques will have that broken glass cleaned up in no time.
Cleaning up Confetti
It’s not that it’s hard to clean up; it’s that there is SO MUCH OF IT! Cleaning up confetti is pretty basic. Start with a good and thorough vacuum. Follow that with a broom using light and short strokes concentrating on small areas at a time. Then repeating the process. This is not so much a party cleanup hacks as it is a reminder that slow and steady will get the job done.
You can also try the broken glass methods of tape and a wet paper towel.
Cleaning up Glitter
Whether it’s party glitter or an angry someone sending you a glitter bomb in the mail (yeah, that’s a real thing), cleaning up glitter is a pain in the you-know-what! I especially hate it for reasons I know not myself. It’s probably because it’s so hard to clean up, though. You never seem to get rid of it completely.
A friend of mine is a huge Christmas fan and her house really shows it during the season. Everything. Has. Sparkles. EVERYTHING. The tree, the banister decorations, the wreath, the random decorative pops of birch branches with pine cones and plastic berry bunches covered in glitter. She has it all. Every year it seems to be more glamorous and grand than the last. After the decorations come down and it’s just the house and glitter it really looks like an abandoned disco hall. Seeing it for the first time, “Good luck seeing glitter all year long”, I told her. But the very next day, it was like nothing ever happened. Here are some of her Christmas party cleanup hacks.
After the decorations come down and it’s just the house and glitter it really looks like an abandoned disco hall. Seeing it for the first time, “Good luck seeing glitter all year long”, I told her. But the very next day, it was like nothing ever happened. Here is how she does it.
- Start with a good vaccum
- Follow by a dust buster
- Repeat with the broom and an upholstery attachement
- Work over with a damp cloth or play dough.
