Oh Sure, He REALLY Needs to Learn Life-Skills
We had just finished dinner the other night–we grilled out and then made s’mores over the hot coals. DS15, on his own, went into the kitchen and started doing ALL of the cleanup jobs, normally shared by all four boys. He did them completely, without being asked, and without even telling us of his plan, and whenever he had a question (which was rare), he asked. He emptied and reloaded the dishwasher, and he washed, dried, and put away the pans and cooking utensils.
If you have a child in special education in high school, you know that one of the big things they want to do is to teach them life skills. That can include things like going to the grocery store, making a bed, cooking, and doing household chores.
Now tell me…do you think his time would be well-spent in a pretend apartment learning household skills? I think not. He already has that down. Let’s teach that boy something he doesn’t know!
