Well, it has been awhile since you've seen me. :-) Gee, oh to go back to the days when I thought weighing 117 lbs. was horrific. Not that I think that is heavy, by any means. I'd just like to weigh that (or 130 or...) again. Of course, that would involve exercise and discipline and all those other things that are foreign to me.

That's really interesting. I wonder if I could find our original homeowners and ask if they did that? If so, wonder why they only did it to one of the trees. It is pretty right now, but it looked odd in the fall, too, when one section lost its leaves before the rest of the tree. Apparently pinks and whites have different growth cycles or something, which makes for an odd-looking tree at certain times of the year!

Rutatita, be careful about calling yourself a geek. Ben, when he was about four, told his aunt that his daddy was a geek. She was concerned and asked, "Ben, what does that mean?" He answered, "It means that he has a big tummy." You're no geek in that sense of the word, my friend!

Okay, so wikipedia isn't always the most reliable source, but if you check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafting you will see a picture of a tree similar to yours (two blossom colors on one tree). I have seen this phenomenon before, and it usually is the result of grafting. See, you learned something new today. There's also an explanation of the process at http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/forums/showthread.php?t=6804 in answer to this question: A yard in my community has a beautiful tree that looks as if they planted a pink and a whit dogwood tree together and they grew together and they appear to be one tree. The tree has two very distinguishable colors of flowers and I want one of these in my yard. How can I go about planting two trees together and when is the best time to plant these trees. Thanks.

I can imagine sitting under the tree with a good book.

If you look closely at that trunk, it looks like it's been grafted. If that is the case, it is still quite beautiful!
