Your Mail, It Smells so Good!

January 7th, 2008 by chewymom

We moved to this town almost five years ago, and we were quite surprised when a day or two later the doorbell rang, and there stood the mailman! “Hi,” he said, “I’m Sam the Mailman! Welcome!” He proceeded to chat with us for a bit, told us he had been on this route for thirty years, and said to let him know if we needed anything. Let me just tell you that kind of thing never happened in Atlanta.

Once I walked out to the mailbox as Mr. Sam the Mailman was driving up, and as he flipped through the envelopes he noticed one for the previous homeowners. He pulled it out of our stack and said, “I know where they live. I’ll just run it by their house.”

In April we bought a new house, and in August we moved in. It is just around the corner from our previous house, so Mr. Sam is still our mailman. He has stopped in a number of times and walked through the house to see the kitchen remodel in progress.

And today, we found this note on the top of our mail.

Gotta love a mailman who stops in for a chat, hand delivers mail sent to the wrong address, and leaves little notes.

And in case any of you are wondering about the coffee, I have to admit that Tulipgirl directed me to this company, which I think she found via her sister Mountain Mama. I heartily recommend buying your coffee from Seth at Old Bisbee Roasters. He roasts it when you order it, and it arrives fresh in about two days. Shipping is free if you order two pounds. And it’s guaranteed to help you get to know your mailman! Tell Seth that Chewymom sent you.

I’ll just have you know that we’ve been in the same Atlanta apt for 5 years and actually have gotten to know our mail lady a little bit. She remembers our names and looks out for packages for us, especially when I was a student and ordered lots of books. We miss her when she goes on vacation because the other guys take way longer and always get things mized up. I was planning on getting her a little somethin’ for the holidays but she was gone — I have an extra gift card for some ice cream I think I’ll leave for her now that she’d back! Yay for Sam and other tireless US mail carriers (now the ones INSIDE the P.O. I’m not always so fond of…)

I don’t know the mailperson who delivers to my home, but I must say that we have the best USPS people who deliver mail at my workplace. They love to chat, will take our personal mail to the PO (they have even stopped by to see if we had any outgoing personal mail even when they didn’t have anything to deliver) and, upon occasion, will take our checks and bring back stamps for us the next day. Unfortunately, we haven’t gotten them to give us stamps for free–YET! We even had one who would do a TGIF dance for us each Friday. He’s retired but he comes by to see us every once in awhile. And, I have to add that my sister who lives in an Atl suburb also has a great relationship with her mailman. I think his name is Charlie. You just didn’t live in the right part of Atl.

As for your being the Queen of Pranks…I may concede to that but I must say that I ranked right up there during my college days. My best one was April Fools’ Day 1987. A day that will live in infamy! In case you don’t remember, it involved a Spanish test, some fake tears, a Snickers bar and cards and some men’s (more specifically Ed’s) underwear.

Hi Smock–Thanks for that tip to another good coffee roaster!

Allison, that’s awesome that you have a great mail carrier, too! I have no idea who ours was when we lived in Atlanta. We actually have a really friendly PO, too. But I LOVE my Sam-the-Mailman! :-)

Okay, Rutatita, My memory is foggy. You’re going to have to retype that entire story. If you email it to me, I’ll post it, and I’ll even give you a regal title. Since you won’t start your own blog. Which you should.

I emailed The Story. Hope you got it! It was almost a novel. :-) You know me–I’m all about making a short story long!
